Chinese President Hu Jintao has decided to cut his visit to the G8 summit in Italy and return home to deal with the growing riot problem affecting western China, according to Xinhua news agency.

Chaos in Urumqi, the capital of China’s far-west Xinjiang region continues to fluctuate. In response, thousands of security forces have been deployed to the capital to dissolve the riots.

Most of the rioting has already been dissolved since Tuesday but small riots are randomly breaking out in the capital for security forces to deal with.

The unrest between Muslim Uighurs and Han Chinese began on Sunday over a huge fight that erupted in a toy factory between the two residents last month. The recent rioting has left 156 people dead and more than 1400 people have been detained by police.

Standing in Hu’s place for the summit will be Dai Bingguo, China’s state councilor, according to Xinhua news agency.
