“Senior Baghdad bomber” killed by U.S.Troops

Baghdad, Iraq, suspected al-Qaeda bomber, Mahir al-Zubaydi was shot dead in a stand-off at his home against U.S. troops, according to U.S. military officials, this Staurday.

Mahir al-Zubaydi, also known as Abu Assad or Abu Rami, was said to be the leader of the group that perpetrated bombings which killed at least 16 people in Baghdad this week.

Military officials also said that Zubaydi planned some of the worst atrocities in Iraq over the past few years including he videotaped killing of four Russian diplomats in June 2006.

U.S. troops tracked Zubaydi down through the use of intelligence to a house located in the Adhamiya district of Baghdad, a strongly Sunni Muslim area, they surrounded the house and and used loud speakers to order the suspect to surrender.

According to the U.S. report, Zubaydi refused by opening fire at the troops and when they returned fire, they killed him.

A woman reported to be his wife was also shot dead.
